Online Counselling in BC and across Canada

I am certified to work with clients across BC and Canada, and online sessions are a growing part of my practice.

Who this is for

People who live outside the Sunshine Coast, who travel, who have mobility or transport barriers, or who simply prefer to talk from their own space. My long-term goal is a practice that is not limited by geography, so that neither of us is tied to a brick and mortar format.

How it works

I use Jane App, which is close to the industry standard for therapists in Canada. It handles both booking and secure video, so there is no separate platform to learn. All you need is a smartphone, tablet, or computer. Most clients find it easier than Zoom or Teams.

What works well online, and what does not

Most presenting issues translate well to video: anxiety, depression, stress and burnout, life transitions, grief, addiction, men's mental health, and general individual work. Two things I prefer to do in person where possible: couples counselling, and trauma recovery work. If we start online and it becomes clear the work needs a room, I will say so.

Safety when you are outside my area

In the first session I make sure you have emergency contact information available where you are. I ask about the emergency contacts you would actually be willing to use and the safety strategies that have worked for you before. I also want to know your protective factors, which means the emotional and social supports in your life: partners, family, colleagues, pets, hobbies, anything that gives your life meaning and purpose. That map matters more online than anywhere else.

What to expect in an online session

Sessions are sixty minutes, the same as in person. You receive a link, you click it at the appointed time, and we begin. I suggest finding a space where you will not be interrupted, using headphones if other people are home, and having water and tissues within reach. The first session covers the limits of confidentiality, your location and emergency contacts, and what brought you here. After that the work proceeds exactly as it would in a room.

Who online counselling suits well

  • People in smaller BC communities with few local counselling options
  • Anyone facing a ferry, a long drive, or unreliable winter travel
  • Parents fitting a session between school runs
  • Shift workers, tradespeople, and people with unpredictable schedules
  • Clients managing health, mobility, or chronic pain barriers
  • People who simply speak more freely from their own space
