Depression Counselling

Depression narrows the world until only the heaviest parts are visible. Counselling widens it again, slowly.

Signs you might recognize

  • Heaviness that does not lift with rest
  • Loss of interest in things that used to matter
  • Sleeping far more or far less than usual
  • Harsh, relentless self-criticism
  • Withdrawing from people who care about you
  • Feeling numb rather than sad
  • Thoughts that things would be easier if you were not here

My approach to this work

I work with depression using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Behavioural Activation for the practical layer, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for the relationship you have with your own thoughts, and psychodynamic and existential work when the depression is tied to meaning, identity, or something unresolved. In my clinical work I see people with major depressive disorder diagnosed by psychiatrists, so I am not easily alarmed and I will not minimize what you are carrying.

Counselling, your doctor, and medication

Counselling and medication are not competing options. If your symptoms are severe, persistent, or physical, a conversation with your GP or a psychiatrist is appropriate and I will encourage it. Many people do their best work with both in place. I do not prescribe, and I will never advise you to stop or change medication.

What to expect in sessions

Sixty minute sessions, weekly or fortnightly at first. Early work is often about small, achievable movement rather than insight, because action tends to shift mood before understanding does.
