Separation, Divorce and Co-Parenting Counselling

Our brains do not make good decisions under extreme stress, and separation is one of the most stressful things a person goes through.

Who this is for

People at any stage of separation: considering it, in the middle of it, or years past the paperwork and still in conflict. I work with parents navigating agreements, co-parenting, parallel parenting, and two households.

Signs you might recognize

  • Every exchange with your ex escalates
  • You are making decisions to win rather than to live well
  • Your children are being asked to carry messages
  • Legal costs are rising and nothing is resolving
  • You cannot separate the grief from the logistics
  • You are functioning at work and falling apart at home

Co-parenting vs. parallel parenting

These are often confused. Co-parenting assumes a workable level of communication and shared decision-making. Parallel parenting accepts that direct communication is harmful and builds structure so each household can run with minimal contact. Choosing the wrong one for your situation causes years of unnecessary conflict, and part of the work is being honest about which one you actually have.

My approach to this work

I see people make expensive emotional decisions in the first months and years of a separation, decisions that could have been reconsidered or better understood in terms of their long-term consequences. Slowing that down is often the core of the work. I know how the family court system functions and what people can generally expect from it, which helps set realistic expectations, but I am not a lawyer and I do not give legal advice. I work with one parent, with both where that is appropriate and safe, and I refer out for mediation and legal process.
